Man Loses Bid for Appeal in Newark Schoolyard Triple Murder

The only defendant to admit his role in a triple murder in a Newark schoolyard has lost his bid to have the New Jersey state Supreme Court hear his appeal.

The high court revealed Wednesday it won't consider Shahid Baskerville's argument that his sentence was excessive and his case shouldn't have been tried in adult court.

Baskerville was 15 in August 2007 when he and five other men and boys attacked four college-bound friends in Newark's Mount Vernon School playground.

Three of the victims were robbed and then lined up against a wall and fatally shot. A fourth who survived was sexually assaulted, shot and stabbed.

Baskerville pleaded guilty to robbery, conspiracy and aggravated sexual contact and received a 30-year sentence.

His co-defendants are serving multiple life sentences totaling nearly 1,000 years.
