Police shot a person they say was carrying a knife near some Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, homes Friday morning, the county district attorney's office said.

Hatfield Township and county detectives seemed to focus their investigation on the backyards of a home along Leon Drive, near West Orvilla Road, in Hatfield Township as the morning went on.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said in a news release that officers were first called to the area for a report of a suspicious person in a woman's yard around 7:30 a.m. He was heading toward another yard.

Officers arrived at 7:38 a.m. and by 7:46 a.m. had located the suspicious person and had that person at gunpoint after deploying a stun gun on the person, according to a timeline supplied by the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety. One minute later, the first call about police opening fire came in.

"Hatfield Police responded and located the male between two woodpiles," the DA's office said.

"The initial investigation indicates the police issued commands for the male to come out and show his hands, and the male did not comply," the DA's office said. "He was tazed, then ran at police who fired at and stuck the male."

Police on the scene then started to administer aid to the injured man, the DA's office said. The man was undergoing surgery at the hospital.

Some neighbors said they heard police telling the person to put down the knife and then they later heard what they believed were several gunshots.

Police found a knife at the scene, the DA's office said.

Montgomery County detectives responded to the scene since the shooting involved police officers.

Investigators have yet to name anyone involved.
