Neighbors and firefighters attempted to get in a house up in flames to rescue people trapped inside. One person died while four others were hurt.
One person died and four others were hurt following a fire in the Germantown section of the city.
The fire started at a row home on E. Clapier Street Sunday around 6 p.m.
"We seen the smoke coming out and that's all we knew," said Eugene Brown, who lives near the home. "[We] tried to get whoever we can out."
Brown tried to get inside through the door but the smoke was too intense. He then smashed the front window.
"The smoke was too thick to even go in there and get there," he said. "We heard her fall down the steps but we couldn't get in."
Responding firefighters were able to get the residents out of the home and place the flames under control.
It was too late for one person who died. Another victim was critically injured and three others suffered smoke inhalation, said firefighters.

No victims were initially identified.
Neighbors told NBC10 a man lived in the home with his wife and described them as good people. Officials continue to investigate the cause.
