Gunman Shot by Guard During Gun Battle That Injured 3 Women, Police Say

Four people were injured in an early morning shooting near Temple University’s campus on Sunday. NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal has details.

A 23-year-old gunman was shot by a security guard during a shootout that also injured three women at a hookah lounge near Temple University, police said.

According to police, the incident happened before 3 a.m. on Sunday at the Hubble Bubble hookah lounge along the intersection of Diamond and North 10th Streets -- near the offices for Temple's football team.

On Monday, law enforcement officials said Eryk Leach-Gilliam, 23, is alleged to have opened fire at a security guard after he was escorted out of the hookah lounge.

According to law enforcement officials, Leach-Gilliam pulled a firearm after being escorted outside causing a security guard to draw his weapon.

The security guard fired, shooting Leach-Gilliam in the left side of his torso, according to investigators. Police said the Leach-Gilliam hit three female bystanders when he fired back.

Stray bullets struck a 20-year-old woman in the right arm, a 19-year-old woman in the leg and a 47-year-old woman in the arm, police said.

All three women were taken to nearby hospitals and were placed in stable condition. Leach-Gilliam was listed in critical condition in a nearby hospital. He is in police custody, officials said.

According to law enforcement officials, Leach-Gilliam will be charged with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of simple assault, four counts of recklessly endangering another person and related charges.

An investigation, officials said, of this incident is active and ongoing.

The security guard was not hurt during the shooting.

NBC10's Randy Gyllenhaal found bullet holes piercing the window of the hookah lounge and spent casings could be seen strewn along the ground on Sunday morning.
