More than one dozen people, including five police officers and a paramedic, were injured in a massive apartment fire in Upper Merion, Pennsylvania. Some residents had to jump to escape the blaze.

The two-alarm fire started at the Kingswood Apartments at 210 Byron Place around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, quickly spewing flames and thick, black smoke throughout the building. Responding police officers and paramedics quickly started to evacuate the building, rescuing people, Upper Merion Public Safety Director Tom Nolan said

"A couple people did jump to safety to get away from the flames," Nolan said.

First responders also used drones to make sure no one was trapped in the burning building.

"At this point we believe we got everybody out of the building," Nolan said.

The fire was placed under control shortly before midnight.

Officials originally said 13 people were hospitalized, but later revised that total to 11 and then to 14. The medic and officers were treated for smoke inhalation, Nolan said.

None of the injuries to residents were considered life-threatening and by Thursday morning only three remained hospitalized, the township said.

Officials have not yet revealed the cause of the fire. They continued to investigate into Thursday.
