Firefighters battle large fire in Philly's Roxborough neighborhood

One firefighter has been taken to the hospital as crews battle a brush fire in Roxborough. The fire sparked along a vacant wooded area on Port Royal Avenue. The fire department says it is not yet under control.

Firefighters are battling a large fire in Philadelphia’s Roxborough neighborhood.

The three-alarm rubbish fire started in a vacant wooded area around 12:45 p.m. Monday along the 200 block of Port Royal Avenue, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fire Department told NBC10.

The spokesperson said 120 firefighters responded to the scene. One firefighter was injured during the fire and taken to the hospital.

An NBC10 photographer at the scene reported seeing little flames but heavy smoke in the area. Residents in surrounding neighborhoods have also reported seeing and smelling the smoke.

The fire was placed under control at 5:10 p.m. Officials have not yet revealed the cause.
