Boy, woman hurt in North Philly rowhome fire

A young boy went into cardiac arrest and a woman was injured in a burning rowhome along North Gratz Street on Thursday morning, officials said

A child and a woman have been hospitalized after a house fire at a home in North Philadelphia early Thursday, officials said.

According to fire officials, crews were dispatched to a home along the 1500 block of North Gratz Street in North Philadelphia at about 6:33 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024.

According to Brandon Wilson, a battalion chief with the Philadelphia Fire Department, crews pulled a 5-year-old boy and a woman -- whom Wilson initially believed to be the child's grandmother -- out of the home.

In a morning update, police officials said the woman was 38-years-old, but did not disclose her relationship to the injured child.

A third person who escaped the home was located by fire crews at the scene as well, Wilson said.

Crews were able to get the flames under control by about 6:49 a.m.

The boy is considered to be in critical condition and the woman suffered minor injuries, Wilson said.

However, Wilson did not detail what may have caused this fire, but he said, an investigation is ongoing.
