Electrical Disturbance at Limerick Power Plant

Operators say there is no threat to health and public safety

An "unusual event" was declared at 8:39 a.m. Wednesday at the Limerick Generating Station, 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia. According to a press release issued by the plant, the electrical disturbance caused a loss of power to the generator cooling equipment and Unit 1 was taken offline.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission considers an "unusual event" to be the lowest of four emergency classifications.

In the release, plant operators assured there is no threat to health and public safety.

Unit 2 is operating at full power. Plant operators say Unit 1 will remain offline until repairs, inspections and testing can be completed.
