This weekend’s Manayunk Bike Race means two things to locals every year: Hundreds of cyclists struggling up the infamous Manayunk Wall and hundreds of drunken spectators brawling and peeing on residents lawns.
Philadelphia officials are determined to put a stop to the latter group this year.
A “Night Bike Court” will go into effect Friday to aggressively enforce laws against public drunkenness and open containers, reports the Daily News.
Similar to the “Eagles Court” that dealt with unruly fans in Veterans Stadium, the “Night Bike Court” is meant to clean up the former family-friendly bike race.
In it’s 27th year, the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship has become more of a hardship than a festive event for Manayunk residents because of the drunken behavior during the race and mess that is left behind, according to the Daily News.
"It gets a little bit worse every year," Kevin Smith, president of the Manayunk Neighborhood Council, told the Daily News. "It just has to get turned around. People would rather lose the bike race and get their quality of life back."
Of course Mayor Michael Nutter has great advice to avoid "Bike Court."
