Driver Charged in NJ Cop's Death Due in Court

An initial court appearance is slated for a truck driver charged in the death of a northern New Jersey police officer.

Authorities in Bergen County say Ryon Cumberbatch was driving an 18-wheeler on Route 17 in Waldwick early Thursday morning when he slammed into an unmarked police car parked on the side of the road watching for speeders.

Waldwick Police Officer Christopher Goodell was pronounced dead at the scene. The 32-year-old had been on the force for five years.

Cumberbatch was charged with vehicular homicide and is scheduled to appear in court in Hackensack Monday morning.

Gov. Chris Christie ordered flags at state office buildings to be flown at half-staff Tuesday, the same day funeral services are to be held for Goodell.
