Bankruptcy reared its ugly head over North Broad Street as the publisher of Philly’s two largest papers released the details of their cost-saving measures Monday.
The Daily News will be printed as an edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer starting March 30, the publisher said.
But each paper will continue to have its own staff, compete for stories and be printed as separate publications.
So, then the Daily News won’t be part of the Inquirer? No…it will be an edition.
Confused? Yep, I was too.
Really, it is just a change, well, on paper.
Essentially the publisher, Philadelphia Media Holdings, will count both papers as one by considering the Daily News a version of the Inquirer -- much like a morning and evening edition.
The move will allow the company to report that the single paper has a larger daily circulation.
“Instead of telling advertisers we have 330,000 circulation (at the Inquirer) plus the Daily News, it will help to say we have 440,000 daily circulation,” Tierney said in a statement on the paper’s website Philly.com.
The new “Inquirer” will also save money on “wire service fees and other costs,” Daily News publisher Mark Firsby said.
Philadelphia Newspapers LLC, the parent company of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in February.
