Delaware Chicken House Fire Claims 21K Birds

Thousands of chickens perished in a chicken house fire in rural Delaware Sunday evening.

Flames broke out in a chicken house along the 13000 block of Hunters Cove Road in Greenwood, Delaware – about 15 minutes south of Harrington – around 5:20 as the property owner was away from the facility.

Volunteer fire companies found heavy flames pouring from the building when they arrived, said the state fire marshal.

An initial investigation determined an electrical malfunction likely caused the fire that left around 21,000 chickens dead and about half a million dollars in damage, said the fire marshal.
