Celebrate the Nation's Independence: 4th of July Events in Our Area

Local 4th of July Festivities may be cancelled or postponed as Hurricane Arthur moves closer to our region. NBC10’s Jesse Gary reports.

Storms moving through our region this holiday weekend are forcing some communities to postpone their 4th of July celebrations.

High winds forced Cape May to reschedule their fireworks display to Sunday at 9p.m., according to city officials. However the city still plans to hold its picnic and patriotic celebration with U.S. Sen. Cory Booker at Congress Hall Friday evening.

The fireworks and concert at Upper Darby High School have been rescheduled to Saturday, July 5. The fun stuff starts at 7:30 p.m. with fireworks to follow at dusk.

The Borough of Conshohocken rescheduled its festivities, including fireworks, to July 12. The schedule has not changed and the first events will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Ambler, Pa.’s fireworks at Wissahickon High School have been postponed to Saturday, July 5 at dusk.

In New Jersey, several towns including Cape May, Lower Township, Margate, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, and Barnegat Township, all rescheduled to July 5 due to weather.

Sunday, July 13 is the make-up date for Washington Township, N.J.’s fireworks at Washington Lake Park at 7 p.m.

Wildwood officials rescheduled its fireworks show to July 5. Lower Township, Cape May County also moved their fireworks to the 5th as did Sea Isle City. If surf and wind conditions do not improve enough by Saturday night, Sea Isle’s Fireworks will be re-scheduled again for Sunday, July 6, at 9:15 p.m.

Sea Isle also cancelled their Junior Olympics. They have not picked a new date for the competition. SIC officials have moved start time for the Neil Diamond tribute concert from 8 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 5.

Lower Township has rescheduled it's Independence Day festival and fireworks until Saturday July 5th.
The festival events will remain unchanged and will run 5pm to 9pm, with fireworks immediately following the festival.

The July 4th Atlantic Pops Concert at the Sea Isle City Band Shell is CANCELLED with no re-schedule date.

Stone Harbor will have its fireworks on Saturday, July 5 at the 81st Street ball field.

Margate has postponed its fireworks to July 5 at 9 p.m., but BBQs with contained fires will still be permitted on both July 4 and July 5 during beach hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

In Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Chester's Annual July 4th Walk Run scheduled for 7am is cancelled. A new date will be posted in the near future.

The Marple Newton 4th of July parade has been moved to its raindate on Saturday, July 5. All times will remain the same.

Participating in the procession is a Newtown Square girl whose need for new lungs led to a landmark decision from the national transplant board.

Sarah Murnaghan, 11, is the Grand Marshall of the parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Alban’s Circle in Newtown Square and continue down West Chester Pike to the Broomall Firehouse on Malin Road in Broomall.

The event will be a chance for Sarah and her family to not only celebrate the nation’s independence but also a major victory in the fight to give sick children a better shot at donor lungs. On June 23, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network voted to give children more consideration for adult lungs. Last year, a federal judge had ordered the network to add Murnaghan to the adult list as she battled end-stage cystic fibrosis.

After two transplants — one failed — Sarah is now breathing on her own for the first time in three years.

Aside from the Marple, Newtown parade, locals can celebrate Independence Day at tons of events throughout the region. Here is the county by county breakdown:
