Carjacker Kills Man Who Was Visiting His Mother

The victim was on the 2100 block of Afton Street in Northeast Philadelphia's Rhawnhurst neighborhood Sunday night when he was shot and killed by a gunman

NBC Universal, Inc.

An armed carjacker shot and killed a man who was visiting his mother in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday night.

George Briscella, 60, was on the 2100 block of Afton Street in the Rhawnhurst section of the city shortly after 8 p.m. when he was approached by three men. At least one of the men opened fire and shot Briscella in the abdomen and back, Philadelphia police said.Β

The suspects also stole a gray or silver 2020 Toyota RAV4 that belongs to Briscella's mother, whom he was visiting at the time. The stolen vehicle has a Pennsylvania temporary tag of 51467PD.

Briscella, who lived on nearby Lansing Street, was taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead just after 9 p.m.

Briscella had four children who served in the marines.

"He helped all the people," Briscella's neighbor, Tanhar Ahmed, told NBC10. "Even my grass in the summertime. He cut my grass."

Carjackings have been on the rise throughout the region with 154 in Philadelphia so far this year. Last week, SkyForce10 captured a Cherry Hill carjacking suspect who stole a woman’s vehicle and was involved in multiple crashes during a wild chase in Philadelphia.
