Bear Spotted Near Wawa Killed After Suffering Broken Leg

For the second time in a week, the search for a bear spotted in our area ended in tragedy.

Officers say they killed a bear Friday afternoon after discovering that the animal had a broken leg.

The bear was spotted earlier near a busy roadway in a suburban Philadelphia neighborhood overnight and again Friday morning.

Police received several calls reporting a bear behind the Wawa located near the intersection of Route 611 and County Line Road in Horsham, Montgomery County in the early morning hours Friday.

Officials at the scene say they saw the bear go back into a wooded area near the convenience store.

A Wawa employee says there is evidence the animal was going through the dumpster in search of food.

Then, around 9:30 Friday morning, a bear was spotted in a yard on Springbrook Lane in the same neighborhood.

Officials with the Pa. Game Commission then found the animal at noon and observed that the bear had a broken back left leg. They then made the decision to euthanize it.

Officials believe the bear had injured its leg at some point on Thursday and that it was leaving behind a bloody trail as it wandered through the area.

On Sunday, another bear that was spotted in the Bensalem area was also euthanized due to a broken leg, possibly from being struck by a car.
