Closing Arguments Set in 1991 Rape, Murder of Elderly Woman Retrial

Closing arguments are expected Monday in a retrial in the rape and murder of an elderly woman in north Philadelphia a quarter-century ago.

Forty-four-year-old Anthony Wright was sentenced to life without parole in the October 1991 slaying of 77-year-old Louise Talley, his neighbor in the Nicetown neighborhood. The conviction was reversed two years ago after DNA evidence pointed to another man.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Wright took the witness stand Friday and again denied he had anything to do with the crimes or had ever confessed. Two witnesses from the 1993 trial have since died. Three teenage boys who testified in 1993 that they saw Wright loitering outside the victim's home took the stand and recanted.

Prosecutors say they plan two rebuttal witnesses Monday before closing arguments.
