Police say a teenager was beaten to death while he was returning home from the grocery store.
Julio Lopez-Cruz, 18, was walking to his home on Rusling Street in Trenton around 6:45 p.m. with a bag of groceries. Suddenly, police say, he was approached by two men who attacked him in an attempted robbery.
Cruz ran to a nearby home and banged on the front door for help. Police say the suspects then grabbed Cruz and threw him to the ground, causing him to strike his head.
The suspects then fled the scene as residents came outside of their homes to help Cruz. Cruz was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say he died from the head injury.
Police have not yet released a detailed description of the suspects.
Investigators say Cruz was a Guatemalan immigrant who came to New Jersey to live with relatives a few weeks ago.
