Atlantic City Closes Garden Pier

Once again, Atlantic City has shut down a landmark pier.

City officials announced the decision regarding the Garden Pier late Friday. But they did not provide details on why it was closed or how long it would be shuttered.

Located at the Boardwalk and New Jersey Avenue, the deteriorated pier is home to the Atlantic City Historical Museum and the Atlantic City Arts Center. It has been damaged in the past by storms and has been shut down numerous times recently, mostly for safety inspections and damage sustained in storms.

The pier was built in 1912, and the city has owned it since 1944. A ballroom that once stood at the end of the pier was washed away in a hurricane several months after the city took ownership.
