2 Dead, 4 Wounded in North Philly Labor Day Shooting

At least five people were shot early Monday morning in North Philadelphia. NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal reports.

Two people died in a North Philadelphia shooting early Monday morning that injured four others, including a teenager, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. on the 700 block of Russell Street in the Franklinville neighborhood, police said. One of the victims, a 33-year-old woman, was shot in the head and shoulder and died at the scene.

The second deceased victim was a 19-year-old man who suffered several wounds throughout his body and died at Temple University Hospital at 5:32 a.m., police said.

Two other men, aged 23 and 55, were in critical condition at Temple University Hospital after also being shot throughout the body, the Philadelphia Police Department said. Additionally, a 17-year-old boy sustained a gunshot to the leg and a 31-year-old man was shot in the arm, the department said, adding that both were stable.

Multiple shell casings were found circled at the scene. Investigators could not immediately identify a suspect or a possible motive in the shooting.

A count by the Philadelphia Office of the City Controller, last updated Sept. 1, shows at least 337 fatal and 1,275 non deadly victims of gunfire in 2022. The Philadelphia Police Department had recorded at least 364 killings, a 1% increase from the same time in 2021, which ended as the year with the most killings in Philadelphia's recorded history.
