Atlantic City workers asked to take unpaid furloughs

Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford is asking city employees to take unpaid furloughs of at least a week, and is considering demoting some police officers as a way to save about $4 million this year.

The police union flatly rejected Langford's call, and other municipal unions have refused to reopen existing contracts to help the city deal with a budget deficit.

Langford says he does not want to lay city workers off, but will consider it as a last resort.

He's also looking at cutting back the number of city-owned vehicles, and is seeking more state aid.
