A Southwest Philadelphia grocery store owner died after being shot and robbed inside his store Monday night.
The suspect came into the store around 7 p.m., opened a door to the protective Plexiglas enclosure at the counter and shot Domingo Rodriguez in the chest, according to police. While Rodriguez, 54, was on the ground dying, the gunman went through his pockets and took $2,000.
Rodriguez' wife witnessed it all from a few steps away. The couple just opened The Perlata Grocery store at 66th and Guyer Avenue three months earlier. They have two young children who were not in the store at the time.
Neighbors described Rodriguez as a nice, hard working person. "I mean you can't earn an honest living around here without these guys doing something to a man trying to make an honest living," Freddie Harris said.
Police are looking for the gunman.
