The mystery of what happened to Doris Anne Wood dragged on, unsolved for 16 years.
Then her ex-husband died and bags of bones were found in a storage unit he kept.
Today, a coroner identified those remains as Doris Wood.
Wood, who was from Delaware, disappeared in 1997. She was on her way to visit her sister, but never arrived. At the time, police questioned Doris’ then husband Robert Wood, but released him without charges.
Robert Wood eventually moved to Kentucky where he died this past May at the age of 59.
A man going through the contents of a storage unit he bought at an auction found the bones inside three grocery bags at Pier Rental Storage in Corbin that Robert Wood once owned. Dental records helped identify those remains as Wood. She was 42 when she disappeared.
The Whitley County coroner said that how Doris Wood died remains an open investigation.
New Castle County, Del. police said the missing person case is officially closed.
