Fred Shropshire is an Emmy award-winning news anchor for NBC10 Philadelphia. You can watch him live weekday evenings during the 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.
Fred joined NBC10 in June of 2023. He came to Philadelphia from WCNC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served as weekday evening anchor. Prior to that, Fred was at WTVD-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he anchored the 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. newscasts. He conducted more than a dozen sit-down interviews with then-Senator Barack Obama during his first historic presidential run for the White House.
“As a self-proclaimed history buff, I’m looking forward to learning more about Philadelphia, one of the country’s oldest cities,” said Fred. “It will be fun for my family and me to explore all that the Delaware Valley has to offer.”
Fred loves connecting people to information and resources that improve the quality of their life. He’s very passionate about building trust and serving the community whether it’s emceeing an event or fundraiser or volunteering.
Fred’s career began at WCTI-TV in New Bern, North Carolina, and includes stints at WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and WGN-TV in Chicago. He has also chased several tropical storms including Hurricane Ike when it made landfall in Galveston, Texas.
Fred graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and in 2006, was honored as a distinguished Nelson Benton Lecturer for the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. He has been recognized with an RTDNA award, regional Edward R. Murrow awards and regional Emmy awards for his anchoring and reporting.
When he is not on the news, Fred enjoys talking to students and emceeing community events. He served as the spokesperson for the CMS Male Empowerment Network, an effort to recruit men in the area to commit to serve as mentors and volunteers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. The program equips and trains men with everything they need to be successful in this endeavor.
