Meghan McCain wants to boot Karl Rove from Twitter -- and called the Republican strategist and his cabal of online friends "creepy."
McCain, in a blog post for The Daily Beast, claims older people are trying to co-opt the youth movement that is micro-blogging by posting unoriginal tweets -- often written by "ghost Twitterers" -- that are as boring as they are forced.
“Karl Rove follows me on Twitter. That’s creepy,” she wrote. “It’s a bit weird to think his people -- not even Rove himself -- are following me. I’d like to think it’s because they find what I’m saying entertaining, but I can’t help thinking they’re just trying to seem connected to young people.”
She rips Rove, and others, for being too out-of-touch for such a hip activity as tweeting. She takes issue with those who send out carefully crafted and market-tested messages or simply boring tweets for being unoriginal and self-censoring.
“I refuse to ‘script’ who I am, what I say, and what I do,” she wrote.
And while she takes other older people to task she gives her septuagenarian father a pass because, in her mind, he uses the medium in an authentic way.
“My Dad -- another new Twitter user -- is making a real effort to use it effectively and not just pander,” McCain writes.
McCain, a notorious Twitterer, has used the medium to spout off about everything from pop culture to politics -- and even used the micro-blogging site to defend herself against radio host Laura Ingraham.
“Laura Ingraham please stop talking about my body,” McCain wrote on her Twitter page after Ingraham made some unflattering comments about McCain's physique.
That tweet eventually made it on to the site, Huffington Post, who she says, along with Rove, is ruining Twitter for the rest of us.
“[That Ingraham incident] made me consider censoring myself,” she said. “Who knows the next time The Huffington Post will have a slow news day and feel compelled to stick a headline next to a particularly unflattering photo of me?”
