Union Set April Opener for the Linc

The Philadelphia Union still doesn’t have a stadium or any players but at least they have an opener planned.

The first Union home game will be played April 10 at Lincoln Financial Field because the Union's Chester-waterfront stadium won’t be ready to go, the team announced Wednesday.

The home opener will feature the Union hosting the D.C. United. The football stadium's larger capacity will allow more fans to attend the inaugural game, the Union noted.

Construction on the Union's own stadium was moving rapidly and the majority of 2010 home schedule will be played there, the team said.

But don’t expect the opener to be a one-off event at the Linc as the groups agreed to bring great soccer from around the world to the home of the Eagles in the future.

“In crafting this relationship with the Philadelphia Eagles and Soccer United Marketing, we’re ensuring that our fans will have an opportunity to see the absolute greats of our game from around the world and throughout our league for many years to come,” said CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz.
