Would-Be Burglar Shot, Killed by New Jersey Homeowner: Prosecutors

Prosecutors say a southern New Jersey homeowner shot and killed a would-be burglar.

Cape May County prosecutors tell The Press of Atlantic City that Lower Township police were called to the Route 109 home around 3:15 a.m. Sunday. The caller said someone was trying to break into the residence.

As police were responding to the report, they learned that the homeowner had shot the intruder after he allegedly broke through a glass door.

The intruder, 21-year-old township resident James Weaver Jr., was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The homeowner, whose name was not released, was treated at the hospital for undisclosed reasons and was released later Sunday.

No charges have been filed, but authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
