Woman Leaves More Than $10M Donation to Children's Home

A former resident has left more than $10 million to a Pennsylvania children's home.

LNP reports the late Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer, who died in 2012 at age 101, left $10.9 million to the Masonic Children's Home in Elizabethtown in her will.

Masonic Villages spokeswoman Megan Leitzell says Shaffer lived at the home until she graduated from high school. The donation equals about five years of the home's operating budget, and Leitzell says no one knew it was coming. It was received in November.

The home, which relies on donations, has 40 residents and has housed more than 2,100 children since it was established in 1913.

Shaffer founded a commercial interior design firm in 1933.

The children's home has installed a plaque in Shaffer's memory.
