Truck Carrying Cattle Overturns on I-495

A cattle truck traveling on I-495 in Delaware overturned, setting two or three cows loose along the roadway.

Delaware State Police say the accident happened Saturday around 1:48 p.m. as Patrick Scholten, 23, of Inwood, Iowa, drove a 2003 Peterbilt tractor trailer on the ramp from I-495 northbound to Terminal Avenue.

The trailer contained approximately 42 cattle. As the truck traveled along a curve on the ramp it overturned onto its driver's side, with both the tractor and livestock trailer landing on the guardrail.

Three cattle escaped from the trailer and walked onto I-495. Troopers and others at the scene were able to remove the escaped cattle from the roadway. Drivers experienced lane closures for several hours.

Scholten, who was not injured, was issued a traffic summons for inattentive driving.
