In the meantime, we continue to urge residents to use the upcoming 24 hours or so to make final preparations for Sandy’s arrival. This includes:

  • Listening to the radio for weather updates
  • Secure or bring inside anything that can be blown around by heavy winds (i.e. trash cans, patio umbrellas, bicycles etc.)
  • Turn your refrigerator and freezer to coldest setting in case of a power outage, they will stay colder longer
  • Turn off propane tank
  • Fill your car’s gas tank
  • Refill medications
  • Make an evacuation plan that includes pets if necessary
  • Put together an emergency supply kit.
  • A gallon of water per person per day
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • A hand crank can opener
  • Non-perishable food items, like peanut butter, tuna fish etc.
  • Battery powered radio
  • Copies of important documents (i.e. prescriptions, insurance papers)
  • Eyeglasses and extra contact lenses
  • Download the free American Red Cross Hurricane app from iTunes or Google Play app store.  It is also offered in Spanish. Features of the app include:
  • One touch “I’m safe” messaging that allows users to broadcast reassurance to family and friends via social media outlets that they are out of harm’s way;
  • Location-based NOAA weather alerts for the United States and its territories users can share on social networks;
  • Remote monitoring of personalized weather alerts where family and friends reside
  • Locations of open Red Cross shelters;
  • Simple steps and checklists people can use to create a family emergency plan;
  • Preloaded content that gives users instant access to critical action steps, even without mobile connectivity;
  • Toolkit with flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm; and
  • Badges users can earn through interactive quizzes and share on social networks.
