A bridge over a Montgomery County creek caved in leading to the road being closed to thousands of motorists.
The sinkhole cropped up Thursday night along Plymouth Road between Interstate 476 and Butler Pike in Plymouth Township, said The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
PennDOT warned motorists that they would be detoured over Germantown Pike and Joshua Road at least through the weekend.
It appeared the sinkhole occurred when the water-battered creek bed shifted below the 53-year-old single-span bridge that carries 15,664 motorists daily, said PennDOT.
“A lot of snow’s been melting an ice has been melting and there’s more water – it finds its way,” said Peter Scerati, PennDOT assistant Montgomery County manager.
Expect delays in the area as crews gather rocks from nearby and fill the hole.
