A suspect shot himself in the leg during a home invasion in Philadelphia, police said.
The incident happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 2500 block of N. Bancroft Street in North Philadelphia.
Investigators say two masked men entered the home and confronted a mother of two in the second floor of the home and demanded she empty her purse.
“In the next room are two children -- a seven-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl -- start crying. One of the perpetrators orders the woman ‘tell your children to stop crying’ and fires the gun,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Small said the bullet struck the suspect in the leg. Both suspects then left the home.
A short time later, the suspect showed up at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment.
Hospital officials contacted police and the victim was brought to the hospital where she positively identified the suspect, Small said.

“The fact that he shot himself in the leg helped us apprehend him that much quicker,” Small explained.
The mother and her two children were not physically injured.
The second suspect remains on the loose.
