A gun battle in the crime-ridden city of Chester left a suspect dead and a police officer injured early Monday morning.
An officer and his partner were responding to a domestic violence call in the area of 12th and Culhane streets around 3:30 a.m. when the gun battle began, according to police.
Chester's Deputy Police Commission Otis Blair says that the officers knocked on the door. The armed suspect answered the door and opened fire.
A gun battle ensued between the suspect and police. A patrolman in his mid-30s was hit once. The suspect, Frank McQueen, a 34-year-old man from Philadelphia, was hit multiple times, said Blair.
Both were transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
McQueen died from his injuries, police said in a news conference mid-morning.
The officer, a 10-year veteran of the force, was treated for a gunshot wound to the lower left side of his body and released about five hours later, said police.
Police have not released the name of the officer.
Witnesses tell NBC10 that they heard more than a dozen rounds fired. Police say two adults were inside the home at the time of the shooting.
