Inmate Convicted of Raping Prison Clerk

An inmate has been convicted in the rape of a female prison clerk in her office at a central Pennsylvania prison last summer.

The Centre Daily Times reports that Centre County jurors deliberated for less than two hours Tuesday before convicting 36-year-old Omar Best of Philadelphia of rape, sexual assault and aggravated assault.

Prosecutors said Best choked and raped the 24-year-old clerk at the State Correctional Institution-Rockview in July. The prison superintendent was replaced after investigators determined that it took almost a half-hour for help to arrive after the victim sounded an emergency whistle.

Best testified that the sex was consensual and the victim asked to be choked.

District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said she may seek a life sentence for the defendant as a three-strikes violator.
