A suburban Philadelphia school district has a hazing scandal of its own and this time it involves members of the high school’s soccer team.
Cheltenham High School acknowledged allegations of hazing among its boys’ soccer team and said an internal and external investigation has led to action being taken against athletes and employees.
In a statement sent to NBC10, the Montgomery County school district said that allegations stem from a Sept. 23 incident that district referred to as “ripping” – a type of wedgie.
The district said an investigation uncovered that some players forcefully pulled and tore a boy’s underwear, allowing the victim to be dangled by his underwear.
“… We notified the local police, which is our practice in such instances,” said district spokeswoman Susan O’Grady. “The matter has been thoroughly investigated and appropriate actions have been taken with regard to certain athletes and certain District personnel with supervisory responsibilities. The District has shared relevant information about the matter with the affected families and staff.”
Cheltenham officials wouldn’t reveal the extent of the actions taken against players and staff.
The boys’ varsity soccer team continued to play throughout the season completing its season on Oct. 16.
These allegations came to light less than a week after the Central Bucks School District canceled the season for the CB West football team amid “waterboarding” and other hazing allegations.
