The alleged attackers in a brutal assault on a gay couple in Center City are out on a bail Thursday -- less than a day after the three Bucks County residents, including the daughter of a police chief, surrendered to police.
Two of the suspects, 24-year-old Philip Williams and 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan, posted 10 percent of the $75,000 bail, while 24-year-old Kathryn Knott --the daughter of Chalfont, Pennsylvania's Police Chief Karl Knott -- posted 10 percent of $50,000 bail, court records show.
Authorities arraigned Williams, Harrigan and Knott on aggravated assault, conspiracy and other related offenses early Thursday morning and the group left their Center City jail cells a short time later, according to officials.
The three alleged attackers turned themselves in Wednesday, more than a week after the beating occurred and just days after a public outcry to identify the suspects pictured in surveillance footage erupted on social media.
Despite the charges they face, the suspects -- through their attorneys -- insisted the gay couple instigated the fight when one of them threw the first punch.
"With respect to my client, he was not the aggressor," said Fortunato Perri, an attorney for Williams. "[He] did not initiate anything and only became involved in the incident after one of the purported victims in the case punched one of the girls in the face."
But anti-gay slurs preceded the attack and old Tweets from Knott led others on social media to accuse her of homophobia.
All three suspects are scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 30.
