Hours after escaped prisoner Arthur Buckel was captured on surveillance video at an Ocean County, New Jersey rest stop, police say the convicted killer is in custody.
Buckel, 38, was captured along the Garden State Parkway near mile marker 76.6, officials confirmed. He was caught on the northbound side of the road.
Buckel was captured on surveillance video about 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the Forked River service station in Lacey Township, Ocean County, police said. Authorities discovered the video after receiving calls from people who spotted the man, whose disappearance launched a massive manhunt last week.
NBC10 learned early Monday that Buckel had been arranging a surrender through family and police, but that he took off instead.
Buckel, who is currently serving time for aggravated assault, drug possession and burglary, was discovered missing from the Bayside State Prison unit at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Winslow Township on Tuesday. He was previously convicted of manslaughter and served 14 years for killing a 10-month-old baby.
Police fanned out on Monday throughout a wooded area near the rest stop where Buckel was spotted. He was taken into custody just after 11 a.m.
