A Brooklyn man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his sister and then fought responding police officers at a home in Toms River, New Jersey Sunday.
Police arrived at a home on the 3400 block of Adams Avenue at 12:19 p.m. for a report of a woman who was bleeding in the street near the house. They then found a 34-year-old woman who was suffering from several stab wounds to her upper torso.
As the officers rendered the woman aid, they found her brother, identified as 23-year-old Giovanny Alba of Brooklyn, New York, standing near the home, according to investigators. The officers identified Alba as the suspect in the stabbing and attempted to take him into custody.
Alba allegedly ignored the officers’ orders and began to attack them. As they were struggling, Alba’s mother, 52-year-old Denise Roman, also of Brooklyn, allegedly intervened and tried to stop the officers from arresting her son.
The officers were eventually able to apprehend Alba and take him into custody. One of the officers suffered minor cuts and scrapes during the struggle.
Alba is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. His bail is set at $250,000. Roman is charged with interfering with a law enforcement officer. She was later released from police custody.
Alba’s sister was flown by medevac helicopter to the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey where she is undergoing surgery. Officials have not yet revealed her condition.
