A South Jersey man died and dozens of other people suffered injuries in a chain-reaction crash involving 13 vehicles along the New Jersey Turnpike in Middlesex County Monday night.
The deadly pileup, which included a bus and tractor-trailers, occurred around 9:15 p.m. along the icy southbound lanes of the Turnpike at exit 8A in Cranbury Township.
Darryl Williams of Bordentown, New Jersey died after becoming entrapped in his Toyota Corolla, state police said.
The deadly accident and a series of other crashes including 40 vehicles in the inner and outer lanes occurred during a mix of rain and snow flurries and below-freezing temperatures on the New Jersey Turnpike just southwest of New York City. The vehicles involved in the crash included four tractor-trailers, two box trucks and a fully loaded bus.
Police considered none of the injuries life-threatening.
At least one vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Police have not yet revealed the cause of the accident or if icy road conditions played a role. However, a Twitter user who took a picture of the scene described the roads between exits 8 and 8A as a "skating rink."
The southbound car lanes reopened to traffic around 3 a.m. Tuesday, but the truck lanes did not reopen until after 8 a.m.
