Police Search for Alligator on the Loose in Mullica Township

The alligator was spotted on Hamburg Avenue between Route 30 and Duerer Street in the Devonshire section of the town Tuesday around 4:45 p.m.

Police are searching for a three to four-foot-long alligator on the loose in Mullica Township, New Jersey.

The alligator was spotted on Hamburg Avenue between Route 30 and Duerer Street in the Devonshire section of the town Tuesday around 4:45 p.m. Police are working with animal protection services to find it.

A mother and daughter driving along Hamburg Avenue Tuesday spotted the gator and recorded on a cellphone as it walked on a family's front lawn.

They said it was moving quickly before it disappeared.

"The police knocked on my door about 8:30 last night," Jenna Alcantara said. "They notified me that there was an alligator spotted on my property."

The officers searched the property but couldn't find the gator.

Residents say the gator could already be in the Mullica river, which runs along the neighborhood.

"People are excited I think. I think people want to see it." Greg Goucher said. "So for a little alligator it's a pretty big buzz."

While the neighborhood is excited about the search, they also remain cautious. Police warn residents to be careful with letting their small pets out in the area and to not approach the alligator if they spot it.

"I do have a dog so I'm watching her as she goes into the yard," Alcantara said. "And I told my kids just to kind of steer clear of the woods until this is found."

If you have any information on the alligator's whereabouts, please call police at 609-652-2037.
