A young boy is in the hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in the Kensington section of the city.
The 9-year-old boy was riding his bike on Frankford Avenue and Elkhart Street around 5:40 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a gold-colored Chevy Silverado that was passing by. Michele Krause, who witnessed the accident, claimed the driver was talking on his phone moments before the crash.
"The dude was on the phone talking, yacking away," Krause said. "He hit the boy, then the metal bar of the truck hit the boy, smacked him in the face and ripped his whole head open."
Investigators say the driver of the truck picked the motionless boy up, placed him in his vehicle and tried to take him to the hospital. He then flagged down a police cruiser that was driving by.
The officers took the boy to St. Christopher’s Hospital where he is being treated for head trauma.
"They just told me that he's stable," said Sue Easdlack, a friend of the boy's family. "They're stitching up the lacerations in his head."
Police continue to investigate the crash.
