3-Year-Old's “Fall” Ruled a Homicide

Authorities say the boy, whose godmother says he fell down the stairs, died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The death of a three-year-old West Philadelphia boy who was hospitalized nearly two weeks ago has been ruled a homicide.

Authorities say an autopsy performed on Jaquinn Brewton after he was taken off life support on Tuesday showed he died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Investigators say the boy's godmother had told them Brewton had fallen down the stairs and she couldn't wake him up when medics arrived at her West Philadelphia home on June 29.

Nadera Batson, the 22-year-old godmother, told NBC Philadelphia she had been helping Jaquinn's mother for the last nine months.

"I love Jaquin so much," said Batson. "I'm devastated that it's not my child, first of all, and it happened in my care. I'm really feeling real bad about this situation."

Homicide detectives are investigating. No charges have been filed.
