A man stole a paramedic vehicle from Franklin Township, N.J., Tuesday morning and later crashed the stolen SUV into a car, killing an 81-year-old Vineland man, say police.
Michael D. Jones, 46, of Bridgeton, N.J., allegedly stole a white 2000 Dodge Durango paramedic truck that belongs to Underwood Memorial Hospital at about 8:20 a.m. The SUV was sitting in front of a fire hall with the keys inside when it was stolen, authorities said.
About an hour later, Vineland Police spotted the stolen truck and a chase ensued. Witnesses said the SUV was speeding upwards of 80 m.p.h. down Delsea Drive and Chestnut Avenue in Vineland, N.J.
"The Durango flew by me, it had to be doing 80-90 miles an hour," said Luis Rivas.
As the chase ventured into a congested area along Chestnut Avenue, police called of the search, say police.
Jones then crashed into a red minivan driven by Alfred Constantino, 81, near the man's home on Holmes Road. Constantino, a longtime Vineland business owner, died from his injuries.
Police arrested Jones, who was brought to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
