Philly-Area Doctor Gets 30 Years in Deadly Pill Mill Case
A Philadelphia-area doctor accused of trading painkillers for cash and sex has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Philly.com reports William O’Brien III proclaimed his innocence Wednesday as a federal judge handed down the punishment.
The Levittown doctor was convicted in June of 123 counts including drug trafficking, money laundering and lying in a bankruptcy proceeding.
O’Brien represented himself during his six-week-long trial and claimed the witnesses against him were lying.
Prosecutors say O’Brien distributed painkillers with the help of an outlaw motorcycle gang. They say he also supplied drugs to a man who died in 2013.
During his sentencing, O’Brien described himself as an honest man who had made a few mistakes.
He has remained in custody since his arrest last year.
