A store owner shot and killed one of three men who tried to hold up a South Philadelphia corner shop Monday morning as the search for a suspect caused police to put two schools in lockdown.
A short time after the shooting at S 12th and Montrose streets in the Hawthorne section of the city, Philadelphia Police could be seen roping off the area around Miss Jessie’s Stop N Shop as Sky Force10 hovered overhead.
Police said three men tried to rob the store at gunpoint around 8:40 a.m. The store owner opened fire, striking one would-be robber in the head. Medics pronounced that robber dead at the scene, said investigators.
A 22-year-old man tried to flee the scene but was apprehended a short time later while the third would-be thief remained at large Monday morning, said police. The unaccounted for suspect could be hindered by an injury.
Investigators recovered two guns at the scene and waited for a warrant to search for more clues.
No word yet on possible charges.
The shooting caused police to lock down CAPA and the Academy at Palumbo, which are mere blocks from the store. The lockdown was lifted around 9:30 a.m., said the district.
