Gunshots shattered an evening of basketball in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia Monday night.
About five hundred people were watching or playing in summer league playoff game at the courts at the Kingsessing Recreation Center located near 50th Street and Chester Avenue when a gunman walked towards one of the courts and fired at least 11 shots directed towards a man near center court, according to Philadelphia Police.
The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. during halftime of the over-18 league playoff game, police said.
Six people were shot, according to police.
- An unidentified man was shot in critical condition after being shot in the stomach.
- A 19-year-old woman was in stable condition after being shot in the leg and foot.
- An 18-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in the leg.
- A 19-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in the knee.
- A 21-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in the leg.
- A 23-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in the thigh.
Details are still emerging including a possible motive and information on the alleged shooter(s). But the gun possibly used in the shooting was recovered about eight blocks away, according to reports.
The rec center where this happened in one of facilities with extended hours in hopes to give teens something constructive to do.
The shooting at the courts was part of a violent night in the city. The court shootings were one of at least four shootings reported within about an hour of each other that left at least nine people shot, police said.
- A 22-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot on the 100 block of Millick Street in West Philly.
- A 23-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot during a robbery on the 800 block of W Butler Street in Hunting Park.
- A 29-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot on the 1600 block of Dyre Street in Frankford.
There was no evidence connecting the shootings.
