A New York City woman who set out to make 300 sandwiches in exchange for an engagement ring from her boyfriend secured her proposal with 43 sandwiches to go.
"I was working on sandwich #257," Stephanie Smith wrote on her blog. "I guess neither one of us could wait until #300."
The culinary challenge started after Smith's boyfriend Eric praised her for a turkey and swiss she made, which he loved so much that he promised to propose if she made 300 more sandwiches. She started a blog last summer to document her sandwich-making journey.
"Ten sandwiches or so in, I did the math," she wrote last September. "Three sandwiches a week, times four weeks a month, times 12 months a year, meant I wouldn't be done until I was deep into my 30s. How would I finish 300 sandwiches in time for us to get engaged, married and have babies before I exited my childbearing years?"
Critics poked fun of the pair's arrangement after Smith detailed Eric's request in an article last September in the New York Post, where she is a reporter for Page Six.
Eric proposed while the pair was vacationing in Barbados. Smith made the announcement on her blog on Tuesday.
