Phillies reliever Ryan Madson has yet to give up an earned run in three innings of work this year. But that’s about where the good news ends for him, because blogger Laura Goldman posted comments from Madson’s wife that were less than flattering to the Phillies faithful:
Sarah says, "For every one fan that may upset us, there are 99 Phillies fans that we love. We have lived here for years, have many friends, neighbors and acquaintances -- who also happen to be Phillies fans -- for whom we have the utmost respect."
Sarah says she had no idea she was talking to a reporter and she's "extremely upset and feels violated by the situation," according to a statement put out by the team on behalf of the Madsons:
"Sarah did not consent to an interview, but rather was approached by Ms. Goldman who did not identify herself as a reporter. She began to ask many person questions about the life of a wife of a professional baseball player. The comments reported by Ms. Goldman were taken completely out of context..."
Even if you don’t like Phillies fans (and hey, some of them can be a touch unpleasant), you don’t go spouting off to someone in public about it. That’s just a bad idea all around. (Blogger's now linking comments to Sarah's pregnancy).
There's really no way that Sarah Madson can win when quotes like these are attributed to her. In the Phillies statement, she does reach out to fans, explaining her true sentiments:
"For every one fan that may upset us, there are 99 Phillies fans that we love. We have lived here for years, have many friends, neighbors and acquaintances -- who also happen to be Phillies fans -- for whom we have the utmost respect."
All people will think is that she's spoiled and ungrateful, and now Ryan Madson’s job is about to get fifty times more difficult. I suspect Sarah Madson will begin spending both the offseason AND the regular season in her beloved California from now on.
