A day after deflecting reporters’ questions about whether he owned a dog and instead saying he wanted to “strictly talk about football,” Eagles quarterback Mike Vick has confirmed he is once again a dog owner.
Vick made the announcement via a statement from his publicist:
"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."
Questions about Vick possibly owning a pooch began to fly after he tweeted a photo of himself and his daughter doing homework last week that featured a large box of doggie treats on the table. Vick quickly removed the photo and replaced it with one not featuring the dog food but the photo had already opened up the door of asking if the convicted dogfighter had a pet.
Since Vick’s NFL career was derailed after he served time in prison for running a dogfighting ring, the Eagles QB owning a dog could rub some people the wrong way even if it is allowed by law.
